Yesterday's Style Meets Today's Technology

(HIT)-When it comes time to selecting appliances, remodelers today are finding that they have a lot of style and character options to get just the right personal look and feel for their individual decor. Remember your grandmother’s stove, where she created Thanksgiving dinner every year? Now you can relive the smell, the tastes, and that simpler time with “antique”-style appliances perfect for that country home feel. How about watching your father work on the hot-rod in the garage during the era of grease and pomade? There are appliances today that capture that 1950s feeling with curves and chrome reminiscent of the past, but incorporating the cooking technology we want today.

The leader in the design and manufacture of retro appliances with unique style and the latest in performance for the home chef is Elmira Stove Works. The company’s antique line has brought 1850s warmth and tradition into the kitchens of country, Victorian, and century home enthusiasts worldwide. Now its retro 1950s Northstar appliances rev up kitchens, basements and garages with 1950s nostalgia and design. Founded in 1975 by Tom Hendrick, Elmira’s outstanding reputation is built on providing home enthusiasts with the option to have appliances that become conversation pieces, contributing to antique or retro décor, not detracting from it.
“Our customers know what they want and are attracted to our appliances because they are truly unique in the industry,” says Brian Hendrick, Elmira’s Vice-President.

The proof is in the product. Their ‘Antique’ line range options include convection ovens, two-cubic-foot food warmers, and up to six cooktop burners (cast or smoothtop electric, sealed gas burners or combination gas/electric). The line also includes a 36" side-by-side refrigerator, microwave oven, wall ovens and a panel kit for dishwashers.Northstar’s retro styling and simplicity come complete with rounded corners, lots of chrome, analog clock and trendy colors. No detail has been overlooked and each appliance is built to the customer’s specifications. If one of the hot fifties colors including Candy Red, Buttercup Yellow, Robin’s Egg Blue, Flamingo Pink, Quicksilver, Gloss Black, Mint Green and Bright White don’t catch a customer’s eye, Elmira will custom-paint the appliances to a customer’s specifications.

“We’ve been surprised at the ages of our customers. A huge interest has come from people who can’t even remember the fifties, but they like the look and feeling of what seemed like a happier, simpler time,”Elmira customers are encouraged to build their own “virtual range” on the company’s website to determine what look they really want prior to ordering. The viewer can choose the size of stove, color, trim options, fuel source (gas, electric and combination) and cooking surface they want. The site then displays their completed virtual range on the screen for further customization or modification.

“Our customers are particular and they know what they want in terms of styling,” Hendrick adds. “No dealer or catalog can show all of the possibilities we can offer them, so we created an easy-to-use, interactive tool that enables each individual to design the ideal appliance for their home.”In 2005, Elmira Stove Works celebrates their 30th anniversary. Hendricks says, “No one else in the appliance business can say that their products span 100 years of styling. What’s important to know is that while our look maybe retro, our technology and performance are everything needed by the home chef today.”
